New Continental Dubnital 50mm Fills the Gap Between Gravel and XC

Continental's new Dubnital 50mm targets gravel bikes with tight clearance. Fast on hardpack, struggles in loose climbs. Here's what matters.

New Continental Dubnital 50mm Fills the Gap Between Gravel and XC

Continental just added a 50mm width to its Dubnital line, and the reason matters more than the tire itself: gravel frames have gotten tighter. If you're running a bike that maxes out around 50mm—common on older race frames or anything with tight chainstay clearance—this is now your widest fast option without going full XC tread.

The Dubnital started as a cross-country race tire. Fast center, chunky shoulders, designed for hardpack and dry-to-damp mixed surfaces. The 55mm version has been around, but plenty of frames won't clear it. The 50mm hits the gap between "gravel tire" and "small MTB tire" for bikes that can't fit the bigger stuff. If your frame clears 50mm but not 55mm, this is effectively your only choice in this tread pattern.

Here's the catch: this isn't a mud tire, and it's not a loose-over-hard hero. One tester noted it struggled on loose gravel climbs—not a surprise given the fast-rolling center. If you're racing Unbound and hit sustained soft sections, you'll give up time to something with more center bite. It's optimized for hardpack, rock, and the occasional loose corner where the shoulder knobs earn their keep. Dry to damp, not wet.

Two casing options: Race (lighter, faster) and Trail (more durable, slightly heavier). Weights aren't published yet, which is annoying if you're trying to compare rolling resistance or rotational weight against a Pathfinder Pro or Riddler. Both use Continental's Rapid compound and are tubeless-ready, hookless-compatible. Price is $86.95, which is mid-pack for a performance gravel tire but not cheap if you're buying four for a season.

If you're on a frame-limited setup and you've been running 45mm or 47mm because that's all that fits, the 50mm Dubnital gives you more air volume and better cornering without changing bikes. If your frame clears 55mm or you ride in sustained mud, this probably isn't your move. It's a clearance-constrained solution that happens to roll fast on the right surfaces.
