Boyd 55mm Road and Gravel Wheels: Deep Carbon Without the Usual Weight Penalty

Boyd's new 55mm wheelsets: one for fast road riding, one for gravel racing. Light, deep, and built for speed. Here's what actually matters in the specs.

Boyd 55mm Road and Gravel Wheels: Deep Carbon Without the Usual Weight Penalty

Boyd just launched two 55mm carbon wheelsets that share almost everything except the surface they're built for. One's a road wheel that doesn't make you choose between aero and climbing. The other is a gravel race wheel deep enough to make you wonder if someone at Boyd has been spending too much time at Unbound.

Both use the same new Grade 54 hubs, both are hand-built with 24 spokes front and rear, and both cost $2,100. The difference is hookless versus hooked, internal width, and whether you care more about crosswinds on pavement or rock strikes in the dirt.

The Road Wheel: 55 Road Disc SL

The 55 Road Disc SL is the lighter of the two at 1,329 grams for the set. That's unusually light for a 55mm hooked tubeless wheel, and Boyd says it lands over 200 grams under comparable premium options. The rim is 400 grams, built from T1000 carbon, with a 24mm internal width and 29mm external. Recommended tire range is 28–38mm, which tracks with where road riding has gone.

The spec that matters here is the 140-joule impact resistance. Boyd reinforced the bead hook and spoke bed, so this isn't just a race-day wheel. It's meant to handle rough pavement and the occasional pothole without turning into an insurance claim. The 2.5mm spoke offset is there to equalize spoke tension, which should mean better power transfer and fewer trips to the truing stand.

Here's the catch: 55mm is still 55mm. If you ride in consistently gusty crosswinds or you're on the lighter side, a deep wheel can still feel twitchy. Boyd doesn't publish wind tunnel data, so I can't verify how stable the rim shape actually is in a crosswind. If you weigh under 140 pounds or live somewhere windy, this might not be your everyday wheel.

The Gravel Wheel: Pinnacle Race

The Pinnacle Race is the more eyebrow-raising option. It's a 55mm-deep gravel wheel with a 28mm internal width, 33mm external, and a hookless design optimized for 45mm-plus tires. Claimed weight is 1,354 grams, which is light for a gravel wheel this deep and this wide.

The durability claim is the interesting part: 150 joules of impact resistance, which Boyd says puts it in enduro-MTB territory. That's higher than the road wheel, and it needs to be. Gravel racing now includes a lot of high-speed descents on surfaces that aren't kind to carbon rims. The same 2.5mm spoke offset and T1000 carbon construction apply here.

The tradeoff is that this wheel only makes sense if you're actually racing gravel or riding fast, smooth-ish gravel roads. If your gravel riding involves a lot of technical singletrack or slow, punchy climbs, a 55mm wheel is overkill. The aero benefit matters most at sustained speeds above 18–20 mph, which is not most people's gravel reality. And at 1,354 grams, it's not the lightest option if climbing is your priority.

The Shared Parts

Both wheelsets use Boyd's new Grade 54 straight-pull ratchet hubs, which weigh 270 grams for the pair and offer 6.6 degrees of engagement via a 54-tooth ratchet. That's not the fastest engagement you can get, but it's adequate for road and gravel. The hubs use Enduro ABEC-5 bearings and offer tool-free service, which is a practical detail if you're the type who actually maintains your own gear.

Both wheels come with tubeless tape and valves installed, and both carry a lifetime warranty. That's a nice touch at this price point, though I can't verify how Boyd handles warranty claims in practice.

The Real Question

At $2,100, these aren't impulse buys. The decision comes down to whether you're chasing speed on pavement or speed on gravel, and whether your riding actually justifies a 55mm wheel. If you're doing crits, fast group rides, or gravel races with long stretches of smooth road, these make sense. If you're climbing a lot or riding in gusty conditions, you might want something shallower.

Orders are open now, with shipping expected before the end of April. Both wheelsets are available in 700c only, so if you're running 650b, you're out of luck.
