Pearl Izumi PI/Red: Compression Kit with Sweat-Activated Cooling Tech

Pearl Izumi's new PI/Red collection leans hard into compression and cooling tech—micro-mesh panels, sweat-activated temperature regulation, and UV-blocking fabric that supposedly reflects infrared heat. The jersey uses In-R-Cool with HeiQ Smart Temp (cooling triggers when you heat up), while the bibs get coldblack treatment to reduce solar heat buildup. Both pieces are built from Italian knits with enough stretch to stay put without restrictive grippers.

The jersey runs form-fitting but not race-tight. Fused sleeve hems rely on compression instead of elastic bands, which means one less thing cutting into your arms on a four-hour ride. Three rear pockets, low-profile collar, slightly shortened torso for aero. The bibs use Pearl Izumi's dual-density ELITE Levitate chamois and a straight-strap bib design—four connection points instead of the usual Y-back. Raw-edge leg bands, zero inseam construction to minimize friction points.

I recently tested both pieces on a 70-mile ride in 93°F heat here in Colorado. The venting and wicking are so good here I was never wet with sweat at all, just white salt magically appearing over time. Airflow is apparent at speed. At 6'2", 195 pounds, I wore a size large—snug with moderate compression, not spray-on tight. The chamois felt noticeable standing around but disappeared in the saddle.

The straight bib straps are worth noting. Most bibs use a Y-back or H-back; this design connects at four discrete points with a ventilated mesh panel bridging them in back. It's a small structural difference that might matter if you've had issues with traditional bib geometries pulling weird across your shoulders or lower back.

What you're paying for here is the material tech—infrared reflection, sweat-activated cooling, anti-odor treatment—not reinvented construction. If you run hot or log long miles in summer, the cooling claims are testable. If you're fine in standard summer weight kit, this is incremental. Pearl Izumi doesn't publish weight specs for the bibs, which is annoying if you care about that number.
