A single-wheeled trailer with 120–160mm of adjustable suspension travel and a 20-inch gravel tire. That's what Tout Terrain is offering with the Singletrailer II Gravel, and it's aimed squarely at parents who want to drag their kids along on rides that most trailers would make miserable.
The mono-wheel design is the key differentiator here. Traditional two-wheeled trailers are wider than your handlebars, which means singletrack is off the menu. The Singletrailer tracks directly behind your rear wheel, letting you thread through terrain that would leave a Burley wedged between trees. The gravel-tuned shock—adjustable across a 40mm range—absorbs the chatter that would otherwise rattle a toddler's teeth loose on fire roads and packed dirt. Continental's Double Fighter 1.75" tire isn't aggressive, but it's a meaningful upgrade over the slick sidewalk rubber on most kid-haulers.
The safety spec sheet reads well: steel roll bar, five-point harness with a Fidlock magnetic buckle (one-handed operation matters when you're also wrangling a helmet onto a squirming three-year-old), and a CrMo steel coupling that clears dropper posts. Four sealed bearings in the hitch should keep the articulation smooth over time. Tout Terrain rates it for passengers from three months to five years, with a 25kg (55 lb) weight limit—so you're looking at maybe three seasons of use for most kids before they outgrow it.
At $1,400 in the US, this isn't a casual purchase. That's roughly double what you'd pay for a solid two-wheeled trailer from Thule or Burley. The question is whether your riding actually demands the capability. If your "gravel rides" are crushed limestone rail trails, a standard trailer works fine. If you're eyeing actual singletrack or rougher forest roads—the kind of terrain that would bounce a rigid trailer around like a shopping cart—the suspension and single-wheel tracking start to justify the premium. Available now in Europe, US preorders are open with a subdued gray colorway.
One thing worth thinking through: a mono-wheel trailer won't stand upright on its own. You'll need the included kickstand deployed every time you stop, and loading a kid in a parking lot requires a bit more choreography than rolling up to a self-standing two-wheeler. Minor friction, but it's the kind of thing that matters when you're already running late for a ride.
