$1,199.99 Buys a Steel Hardtail With Three Fork Options
State's 4130 Trail now runs three forks and starts at $1,199.99. The real win: Eagle Transmission AXS on a standard HG freehub, no new rear wheel.
Four sizes, three forks, one frame, and a $1,199.99 floor. That's the State 4130 Trail now — the hardtail has turned into a parts menu, and the interesting part isn't the geometry chart, it's the freehub.
State will sell you this bike with SRAM Eagle Transmission AXS for $500 over the mechanical build, and the XS-1270 10-52T cassette mounts to a standard HG freehub. No XD driver, no replacement rear wheel, battery and charger in the box. Anyone who's tried to price a Transmission swap onto an existing bike has run that math and quit halfway through. Clamping the S1000 derailleur around the rear axle via the UDH dropout also removes hanger alignment from your life, which matters more than it sounds like when your maintenance window is 20 minutes after bedtime.

The fork decision is the whole bike
Same frame, three front ends, and State is honest that these aren't the same bike with the squish removed. The RockShox Psylo Silver RC gives you 130mm, a 65° head angle, and 5 lb 12 oz of fork. Drop to the carbon rigid at 563g and the axle-to-crown shrinks 55-58mm — head angle steepens, BB drops, wheelbase tightens. You get a sub-28-pound rigid ATB with three cargo mounts per leg and clearance for a 32-inch wheel, which State admits was a parts-availability experiment more than a product plan.

Where this gets less tidy: swapping forks later isn't a five-minute job. New steerer cut, headset crown race, brake hose length, probably a fresh star nut. Realistically you pick one at checkout and ride it for two years. The platform story is about buying the right bike the first time, not about shapeshifting in the garage on a Saturday you don't have. The steel fork is $179.99 and the carbon is $325 if you do want a second one on the shelf — that's a real option, just not a free one.

Who should skip it
Four sizes covering XS through XL means each one spans two traditional sizes. If you're between sizes or have long femurs and a short torso, you're adjusting with stem and post rather than frame geometry. Riders who care about precise fit should go try one before clicking buy. The Psylo Silver RC is also a Motion Control damper on 35mm stanchions — perfectly serviceable, not something you'll be praising on the third hour of a chunky descent.
For the rider who wants one steel bike that does gravel, bikepacking, and the mellow singletrack 15 minutes from home, the $1,199.99 steel-fork build with Deore 1×12 is the honest answer. Triple bottle mounts, 73mm threaded BSA, internal dropper routing, 2.6-inch tire clearance, parts you can replace at any shop in the country. Buy that, then spend your upgrade money on a dropper and better wheels — in that order.
