SRAM Rival eTap AXS Announced: Affordable Wireless Shifting Arrives

It was just a matter of time, SRAM just announced its wireless Rival AXS group. The Rival AXS 12-speed groupset is SRAM’s third-tier wireless drivetrain to complement the high-end setups offered by Force AXS and Red AXS. The Rival eTap AXS groupset promises all the advantages a wireless system can bring at a much lower price point.

SRAM Rival eTap AXS Quick Facts

  • The cheapest wireless road groupset from SRAM
  • 12-speed
  • Rival AXS uses the same eTap shift logic as other AXS groupsets
  • Power meter upgrade option
  • About 300g heavier than Force AXS
  • 1x and 2x options are available, including a ‘Wide’ option
  • Can be mixed and matched with Force, Red and SRAM’s AXS mountain bike components

No More Rival Rim Brakes?

Rival will now be wireless and hydraulic disc brake only. While Rival 2x mechanical and rim brake options are no more, SRAM will still offer RED and Force eTap AXS with a mechanical rim brake option.

SRAM Rival eTap AXS Single Sided Power Meter

SRAM Rival cranksets will have the option for an integrated power meter. The spindle-based option is a new single-sided design from Quarq that adds just 40g to the bike. It measures the left leg only and is powered by a single replaceable AAA battery. The power meter supports both BLE and ANT+ and has an IPX7 waterproof rating. You can upgrade any of the new cranksets to power by replacing the non-drive arm and spindle assembly with the pre-installed power meter for $250.

SRAM Rival eTap AXS Gearing

SRAM kept Rival’s 12-speed cassette options to just two choices, a 10-30t, and 10-36t. The 10-30t cassette has 300% range and 6 consecutive cogs at the small end of the cassette. The 10-36 has a huge 360% range.

Standard cranks will be offered in 48/35t and 46/33t double configurations only. The Wide cranksets will come in a 43/30t double, or the new Rival 1 Wide crankset with 38, 40, or 42t chainrings.
