Shimano's New SPD Cleats: The CL-MT001 Redefines Pedal Engagement

Shimano introduces the CL-MT001, its first new SPD cleat in nearly 30 years. Learn how its multi-directional entry and backward compatibility simplify clipping in for all riders.

Shimano's New SPD Cleats: The CL-MT001 Redefines Pedal Engagement

Shimano has launched the new CL-MT001 two-bolt SPD cleat, the first significant update to their SPD platform in nearly three decades. This new cleat is designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of cyclists, from enduro racers and trail riders to daily commuters and those new to clipless pedals. The key feature of the CL-MT001 is its multi-directional entry, which simplifies the process of clipping in.

Unlike the classic SM-SH51 cleat, which requires a specific toe-first motion, the CL-MT001 allows for multiple engagement methods. Riders can clip in with a traditional toe-first approach, a heel-first motion, or by simply stomping straight down onto the pedal. This enhanced versatility is a major benefit for many riders, including cyclocross and gravel racers needing fast remounts, enduro riders navigating technical terrain, and new riders looking for a more intuitive clip-in experience. Despite these new features, the CL-MT001 cleat is fully backwards compatible with all existing two-bolt Shimano SPD pedal and shoe systems.
