Why I Hope to Die at 75
Why I Hope to Die at 75 by Ezekiel J. Emanuel. Recently, there’s been a buzz around extending human lifespans, but Dr. Emmanuel, an oncologist and bioethicist, has a different take that's turning heads: he hopes to die at 75. He makes a provocative case against the common fantasy of aging gracefully, where everyone imagines themselves as the outlier who remains physically agile and mentally sharp until a swift, painless exit. Dr. Emmanuel contends that the inevitable decline brought on by aging will eventually diminish everyone’s quality of life, increasing the burden on their loved ones. He doesn't plan on ending his life at 75, but he intends to forego preventive health screenings like colonoscopies and cardiac stress tests, and will refuse any life-prolonging treatments once he hits that milestone.
I don't necessarily agree, but it's an worthwhile read and interesting perspective.
