Van der Poel Wins Dwars door Vlaanderen Among Chaos

Hows this for a record?  Cyclocross world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) has only started two WorldTour races on the road, and as of today, he already has his first WorldTour victory.

What did it take to secure victory at a very chaotic edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen?

Aggressive riding and organization chaos set the tone for the day. The 183-kilometer journey from Roeselare to Waregem saw a lot of fast racing in the first hour or so which kept things held together. At 130 kilometers to go, though, an eight-man break finally got clear and built their gap up to over two minutes over the following hour. Instead of getting caught, they themselves nearly caught the women’s race which had been slowed by a crash and were thus stopped by race officials.

The peloton was neutralized as well, but not before catching the breakaway group.

With the women’s race safely down the road, the men’s race was restarted with the break given time to rebuild their advantage. Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe), it turned out, wasn’t in the reformed break despite being there earlier, so the race was halted once again to allow him to rejoin the front. The race then resumed fully with 70 kilometers to go.

At 65 kilometers to go riders made their first trip up the short but steep Knokteberg. The climb gave ven der Poel and a few others the chance they needed to jump out of the peloton in pursuit of the leading breakaway.

With 35 kilometers to go, another chase group went clear of the peloton with Bob Jungels (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal) among the ranks. Jungels and Benoot then caught van der Peol and fellow chaser Anthony Turgis (Direct Énergie). Only Pöstlberger and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) remained up the road hanging on from their early breakaway.

Then, Oliveira suffered a heartbreaking mechanical which left Pöstlberger alone and in the lead. With no one to help grind down the miles, the Austrian national champ was caught with 25 kilometers to go forming a five-man lead group. The quintet would survive the day.

In the finishing straight Turgis was the first to jump. Van der Poel was quick to cover his wheel and surged past for the win at Dwars door Vlaanderen (video above).
