Tour of Colorado 2026: Elite Cycling Returns to the Rockies
Elite cycling returns to Colorado in 2026! The Tour of Colorado, a five-stage race, aims to revive the state's rich cycling history. Learn more about the event.

Colorado, a state synonymous with breathtaking landscapes and a rich cycling heritage, is set to welcome back professional stage racing with the announcement of the Tour of Colorado in September 2026. Organized by the British event planning company, Infinity Events Group, this five-stage race aims to revive the spirit of past iconic events like the Coors Classic and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, bringing world-class cycling back to the Rockies.
For the first time since the Colorado Classic concluded in 2019, professional cyclists will once again test their mettle on Colorado’s challenging terrain. The return of stage racing is not just a sporting event; it’s a revival of a legacy that has seen legendary cyclists grace the roads of this picturesque state.
A Rich History of Cycling in Colorado
Colorado's cycling history is deeply ingrained in the sport's narrative. From the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic in the 1970s to the Coors Classic in the 1980s, which at its peak was a two-week-long event and a significant fixture on the international cycling calendar, Colorado has always been a hub for elite racing. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge from 2011 to 2015 further cemented this reputation, followed by the Colorado Classic from 2017 to 2019. These events not only showcased the state's stunning scenery but also provided a platform for both domestic and international cyclists to compete at the highest level.
Infinity Events Group's Vision
Infinity Events Group, led by director Scott Taylor, is determined to create a world-class race with "bold ambitions for the future." According to Taylor, the combination of Colorado’s rich cycling history, stunning scenery, and passionate fan base provides the perfect foundation for this endeavor. The group has secured the backing of Colorado’s Governor, Jared Polis, and USA Cycling, signaling strong support from key stakeholders.

“We are very pleased to be developing the new Tour of Colorado stage race,” said Scott Taylor in a statement. “The combination of Colorado’s rich history of cycle racing, the amazing scenery and the incredible support that past races have received provide the perfect foundation for us to create an exciting, world-class race with bold ambitions for the future.”
Strategic Timing and Future Plans
The Tour of Colorado is strategically planned for September 2026, aligning with the late-season North American racing block, which includes events like the Maryland Cycling Classic and the Grands Prix Québec and Montréal. This timing aims to attract top European teams, making the long journey more feasible.
Initially, the 2026 race will feature a men’s-only event, with plans to introduce a women’s race in subsequent years. This phased approach allows the organizers to focus on establishing a sustainable and successful event from the outset.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond the sporting spectacle, the Tour of Colorado aims to deliver significant economic and social benefits. The event is expected to boost local economies through tourism and related spending. Additionally, Infinity Events Group plans to implement a social impact program aimed at maximizing benefits for local communities and businesses throughout the state.

Governor Jared Polis emphasized the economic and promotional aspects, stating, “This exciting event brings spectators from around the globe, bolstering Colorado’s outdoor recreation economy and highlights why Colorado is the best state for all athletes.”
Challenges and Optimism
Bringing back a professional stage race is not without its challenges. Securing commercial sponsors is crucial, as highlighted by Scott Taylor. “We didn’t approach sponsors until we had the governor’s backing,” Taylor told The Denver Post. “The point of making the release is, we do want to start talking about what we’re trying to do, but it is all dependent upon getting the necessary commercial partners. We’re confident and we’re optimistic that the timing is good, but it all hinges on getting the financial backing in place.”
Despite these challenges, there’s a palpable sense of optimism. Brendan Quirk, president and CEO of USA Cycling, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Their vision for The Tour of Colorado is exciting. It will be an inspirational event for the sport in the U.S. and will be an amazing opportunity for people to see some of the best cyclists in the world.”
Local hero, Sepp Kuss, winner of the 2023 Vuelta a España, also voiced his excitement: “It’s great news that a stage race will return to Colorado. I can’t wait for the peloton to experience the beauty of my home state. We have some tough and amazing climbs that will challenge the best riders. I hope the Tour of Colorado can inspire many to follow our sport more closely or, even better, start riding their bike themselves.”
Looking Ahead
As the countdown to September 2026 begins, anticipation is building for the return of elite stage racing to Colorado. The Tour of Colorado promises to be more than just a race; it’s a celebration of the state’s cycling heritage and a catalyst for future generations of cyclists. With strong support from state and national governing bodies, and a clear vision from Infinity Events Group, the future looks bright for cycling in Colorado.
