Now’s the time to start gearing up for summer hiking and this sweet deal on  Salewa’s Firetail 3 GTX  approach shoe is a good place to start. I ditched traditional hiking boots for approach shoes for everything but backpacking awhile back. Although they lack an upper cuff they’re still plenty stable and I feel much more sure footed over varied terrain thanks to their smaller size and light weight. The Firetrail uses Vibram’s Reptail sole with Megagrip compound, which means you can scramble over rough terrain and pull off sketchy descents without worrying about grip. Goretex means you’re feet will stay dry and the unique lacing that extends nearly to the toe and clear back to a heel-lock provides a nice snug fit. These will be my hiking and fourteener climbing shoe for the next season or two, I bought my pair at full price for just $100 they’re a steal.
