Matteo Trentin Solos to Victory on Stage 17 of the 2019 Tour de France

Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) won Sage 17 of the 2019 Tour de France today after going solo on a day when the peloton was more than happy to allow the breakaway to stay away. Trentin timed his attack well and went clear with around 14km to go to the finish line.

The break’s advantage crept up and up, peaking at over 18 minutes. Thanks to that time gap, Trentin took his victory as the bulk of the peloton hit the final climb, still some 13km from the finish line.

When the yellow jersey group crossed the line, over 20 minutes after Trentin, it rolled in calmly clearly saving energy for the high mountain stages which start tomorrow.
