Decathlon Made a Bikepacking Bag From European Flax Instead of Plastic
Decathlon's linen half-frame bag uses European flax instead of synthetic fibers. 34% lower carbon footprint, £50, but not waterproof. Here's what matters.
Decathlon just released a half-frame bag made from European linen. Not recycled polyester with a green label slapped on it—actual flax, grown between Normandy and Amsterdam, spun in Poland, woven in France, sewn in Czechia. The whole supply chain is accessible by train, which the team used to visit each production stage. It's a 34 percent carbon reduction compared to a synthetic equivalent, and they documented the three-year process in a 20-minute film that's worth watching if you care where your gear comes from.
The bag itself is straightforward: 2.5 liters, drive-side and non-drive-side zippered pockets, one external mesh pocket, adjustable velcro mounts. Fits medium to XL frames. At £50, it's priced like a mid-tier synthetic bag, which makes the material choice more interesting—you're not paying a sustainability premium.

Here's the catch: linen isn't waterproof. It's a stitched textile bag, so if you ride in variable weather, anything sensitive (phone, battery, spare tube) needs to go in a dry bag first or live elsewhere on your bike. That's not a dealbreaker if you're already running a system with waterproof stuff sacks, but it's a constraint worth knowing upfront. Linen also doesn't have the abrasion resistance of ballistic nylon, so durability in high-wear areas is an open question I can't answer yet.
What matters here isn't just the material—it's that Decathlon mapped the entire production chain and kept it regional. Most bike bags are black boxes: you know the brand, maybe the fabric weight, but nothing about where the thread was spun or who sewed the seams. This one's traceable, which is rare enough to be notable. If you're the kind of rider who thinks about lifecycle impacts beyond just "recyclable," this is one of the few bags where you can actually verify the claims.
