The Volta a Catalunya is through stage 5 now and heading into its final two stages this weekend. Thomas De Gendt opened the race with a stunning solo victory on stage one, here’s a recap of stages two through five in anticipation of an exciting weekend of racing:

Matthews wins Catalunya Stage 2, Froome Crashes

The 168-kilometer second stage left from Mataró and traversed three categorized climbs and several uncategorized ascents with a short uphill lead into the finish. Josef Cerný (CCC), Jonas Gregaard (Astana), and Marco Minnaard (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) made up the day’s breakaway. The gap topped out at just about seven minutes before the peloton, led by Lotto Soudal and Sunweb, began to pull the group back in.

Michael Matthews sprinted to his first victory of 2019 in a slightly uphill finish in the Volta a Catalunya’s second stage. He bested defending overall champion Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) in doing so.

Lotto Soudal’s Thomas De Gendt retained his overall lead, but the GC picture had its shakeups. Most notably, Chris Froome dropped out of overall contention after a crash and subsequent 14-minutes time loss. José Herrada crashed hard at 100 kilometers to go, abandoning the race with a broken collarbone.

Yates Conquers Colombian Climbers to Win Stage 3

Facing a trio of Colombian climbers and Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates), Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) came away with a win in stage 3 of Volta a Catalunya atop the climb to the Valter 2000 ski station. Egan Bernal (Team Sky) grabbed second and Martin was third.

Bernal kicked off with an attack halfway up the final climb. Only Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was initially able to follow.

But as Bernal’s pace slowed, Yates was able to gradually bridge up to the duo of Colombian climbers. A third Colombian, Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) then bridged the gap to the group along with Martin.

In a surprising move, Martin made a hard attack and led into the last 300 meters. Yates was on his wheel and swept past the Irishman as the road swung right into the finish. Bernal responded to Yates’s acceleration but couldn’t come past for the win.

Lopez Climbs to Victory and Overall Lead in Stage 4

With a long-range attack on the final climb of a mountainous stage 4 at  Volta a Catalunya, Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) took a stage win and the overall lead. Two riders from the day’s early breakaway survived for a day on the podium: Marc Soler (Movistar) finished second and Gregor Muhlberger was third.

The stage saw riders make two ascents of La Molina before the finish. Although fairly long at 11.5km, the climb is moderate at 4.3 percent average gradient. Leading into the finish climb, Soler and Muhlberger were the last survivors of the day’s early breakaway, with a lead of about two minutes over the peloton. Meanwhile, Team Sky was pushing a hard tempo on the lower slopes which quickly shed the overall race leader Thomas De Gendt.

With about eight kilometers to go, Lopez launched his winning attack. Egan Bernal (Team Sky), Nairo Quintana (Movistar), and Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) responded, but  Lopez’s pace proved to be to much. Inside of the final five kilometers, the Colombian climber caught Soler and Muhlberger.

Though Adam Yates and Egan Bernal chased as hard as they could, they ended the stage 16 seconds behind Lopez.

Max Schachmann Holds Off Chasing Group to Win Stage Five Solo

Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) achieved the impossible with a solo win at stage five of the Volta a Catalunya, dropping his breakaway companions to hold a 20 second lead into the final kilometres. The German was part of a quartet which escaped the peloton with about 140km of the 188km stage to go.

Schachmann’s companions in the breakaway included Tejay van Garderen (EF Education First), Andrey Amador (Movistar) and Bert-Jan Lindeman (Jumbo-Visma) – but sensing the peloton’s breath on the back of his neck, the Bora-Hansgrohe rider left them in his wake at 11km remaining.

Team Sky’s Egan Bernal crashed in the final kilometre, but carried his bike over the line with no clear injuries.

Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) had a relatively easy day in the leader’s jersey, finishing 10th. Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) maintained second in the overall leaving the overall standings largely unchanged with two days of racing to go.
