The Trek 520 has been around since 1983. It began life as a steel-framed road bike and due to its rugged design quickly was adopted by the biketouring crowd. It’s tough, rides well and is covered with mounts.
For 2021, Trek has given the 520 a full gravel adventure makeover with the Grando version of the 520 Disc.
It’s the same chromoly steel frame as the standard 520 Disc paired to the same alloy fork. For the Grando build you get mechanical, as opposed to hydraulic, disc brakes for repair-ability on the go and a Shimano GRX drivetrain along with wider tires. The bike supports 275 pounds, including the rider.
This is a pretty awesome bikepacking setup right out of the box if you don’t want to start a Craigslist 520 adventure.
