Trek and Bontrager Release New Helmet with WaveCel Technology
Bontrager WaveCel helmet construction claims to be 48x safer than EPS foam
Trek and its sister brand Bontrager put out a lot of cryptic social media last week hinting at a new launch, turns out the big announcement was all about safety.

Trek announced a series of new helmets featuring WaveCel technology, which Trek says is 48 times more effective than standard EPS foam at preventing concussions resulting from common cycling accidents.

WaveCel is a collapsible cellular material (it looks a lot like the Koroyd crumple sections in Smith helmets). It is designed to absorb energy in multiple ways, according to Trek, by flexing, crumpling and gliding. Where EPS foam alone only protects against direct impact, WaveCel is said to protect the cyclists head when twist, turns and angled impacts occur.

The technology will spread across a range of new helmets offered by Bontrager. There are four in total for now with two options for the road: the Bontrager XXX WaveCel, which will sell for $300, and the Bontrager Charge WaveCel, a commuter targeted helmet which will sell for $150. Two mountain bike options are available too.
