The New Special Edition Subaru STI Should be the Standard

Subaru announced special edition Subaru WRX and STI “Series.Gray” models today which will go on sale later in the year. Usually, Subaru ‘special editions’ are at most a paint job and special badging, unless you live in Japan where all the actually special STIs and WRXs have exclusively lived in the past. But these Series.Gray models are something special indeed and they’re coming to the U.S.

Both cars are available with a manual gearbox only, no CVTs here, and will sport the special paint job. Subaru calls it Cool Gray Khaki, not sure about the name but I like the color. Only 750 WRXs and 250 STIs will be built with price tags of $32,595 and $39,695 respectively.

As for the special bits. The WRX, based on the Premium trim-level, gets JURID front brake pads, LED headlights, fog lights and push-button start. The STI gets all of that plus Bilstein-tuned suspension and dampers, inverted-strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension. The car also comes with blacked out trim, including the 19-inch alloy wheels, and has silver Brembo calipers on the corners. Inside are Recaro seats with an 8-way power driver’s seat. A pretty nice list of performance upgrades without pushing the price premium too high.

It’s really a shame that only 1000 examples of the Series.Gray will be made.
