Old Man Winter Rally Stopped Mid-Race Due to Heavy Snow

The  Old Man Winter Rally gravel race here in Lyons, Colorado yesterday was stopped mid-race due to freezing temperatures, icy roads and heavy snow. CDOT pulled the plug about 30 minutes into the 100k race, the 50k never got the chance to start.

Alex Howes and Peter Stetina, among other pros, were at the race looking for an early season win. As was I. But lo:

“Due to the winter weather – the bike race is cancelled. All bike racers please report back to the start/finish,” read the race organizers’ message.

I guess Old Man Winter wins this one.

For those who missed out, race organizers posted the following on Facebook today:

Yesterday’s weather was unreal. You never know what Mother Nature will send our way. 50 and sunny on Saturday and 25 with snow on Sunday. Nonetheless, we were there to serve up a truly epic winter adventure as we do every year. Unfortunately, the conditions caused the Boulder County officials to stop the event. We are just as bummed as you might be but hope that you understand that the decision was totally out of our control. We made the best of the situation and the 10K run  and after party were a blast and everybody got home safe!

Sometimes the adventure is the journey to race day, and the unique experiences that come out of the unknown. This is what we value at Old Man Winter – by hosting a race in February in the Rocky Mountains. The challenges and unknown are always a factor. The determination and grit of our racers is what keeps us going. We are so proud to be a part of a community that wants to throw on running shorts or hop on a bike during a snow storm. We can make adventure and fun out of everything.

We will not be able to reschedule the  Sufferfest Beer Company  Old Man Winter Rally  this year nor will we be able to offer refunds.

However, as our way of thanking you for your support and understanding
For all riders that checked in to the event ready to rock it, we would like to offer you:

*$20 off your entry into the 2021 Old Man Winter Rally
*25% discount into any category at our soon to be announced  Gold Rush Bike Rally  which will be held on September 9/27/20.
*We will rollover the prize money from this years Old Man Winter event to 2021 making the purse over $10,000!!
*Host a series of free training rides throughout the year, supported by our sponsors

We hope you understand the situation and realize that all of us at  #oldmanwinterrally  are even more bummed as you might be since we go to great lengths to make the day and event an awesome experience all participants and sponsors.

Old Man Winter, you won this round, but we will be back in February 2021!!!

Thank you for your continued support and smiles!
