The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been my musical numero uno since the age of 11, they’re funky and perfectly weird. When RHCP decides to appear on a show, you know things are going to get weird. James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” displayed just how awesomely weird things can get when you get Anthony, Flea and the crew crammed in an SUV.
Beginning with the classic “Can’t Stop,” in which Corden hilariously adopts John Frusciante’s vocals, bassist Flea immediately concludes with his rendition of “Food Glorious Food” from Oliver! The Musical. Why? Who the hell knows.
Flea and lead singer Anthony Kiedis were childhood friends, but Flea mentions how he used to bully Kiedis’ former best friend. Flea then explains how he has never been in a fight, Corden is surprised as was I and says, “I love a good man wrestle.” So Corden and Kiedis go at it.
Corden later remarks on he didn’t recognize Kiedis because he was wearing clothes, at least more than a sock that is. In typical Kiedis fashion, he took that topic as a cue to start stripping, and Flea and Corden followed suit.
The whole bit was of course in place to promote The Getaway, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first record since 2011. It will be released this Friday, June 17.
